Abstract:

It’s the 15th Anniversary of What Kids Are Reading! For 2023, we studied Accelerated Reader records for 5.4 million K-12 students at 22,185 schools across all 50 states, plus DC, who read 171 million books during the 2021-2022 school year, and the 155,823,367 times books were opened on myON during the same time frame. The report includes several book lists for each grade, K-12: Top Print Titles, Popular Digital Books, Authentic Spanish Literature, In Demand Audio, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Themes. Sections are divided by grade-range groupings (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and feature a map of the signature book for each state (of the top 100 books read last school year, the title read most in that state compared to its nationwide ranking) as well as a New and Now list, which includes books that students read and quizzed on for the first time in Fall 2022. The report also includes 15-Year Celebration features that provide fun tidbits about the history of the report; the Research Snapshot, which examines how just 15 minutes per day of reading practice can help improve student’s vocabulary, comprehension, achievement, and growth; and an Introduction written by Michelle Hosp.
