What Kids are Reading: 2022 edition

Abstract:

For each grade, K-12, What Kids Are Reading shares lists of New and Now Reads, Top Print Titles, and Popular Digital Books based on data from Accelerated Reader and myON. Each grade-level spread also displays curated book selections for Authentic Spanish Titles; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Themes; Social and Emotional Learning Topics; and a brand-new list for 2022 of titles helpful for learners in each grade range: Highly Decodable (K-2), Vocabulary Practice (3-–5), Background Knowledge Builders (6-8), and High Interest and Accessible (9-12). All book choices are annotated with title, author, and readability information (ATOS level, interest level, and Lexile measure, as well as nonfiction and Spanish tags). In addition, a web callout on every grade-level page directs readers to either the WKAR Custom Report Tool or additional blogs and articles on Accelerated Reader and myON. The author of the Introduction is Kymyona Burk, Senior Policy Fellow, Early Literacy, at the Foundation for Excellence in Education. Author Jacqueline Woodson (The Day You Begin) pens the Foreword, responding to the question, "What does reading and writing mean to you in 2022?," and three additional authors also answered this question in essays found sprinkled throughout the About the Report section: Yangsook Choi (The Name Jar), Francisco X. Stork (Marcelo in the Real World), and Padma Venkatraman (A Time to Dance).
