Smarter Scoring for Constructed Responses: How SchoolCity helps educators save time while maintaining scoring consistency, accuracy, and teacher oversight

Abstract:

From the Executive Summary: "Grading open-ended student responses is one of the most time-consuming parts of a teacher’s week and is becoming more difficult to do consistently as class sizes and assessment volumes grow. Innovating through Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) allows Renaissance to assist in streamlining this process. SchoolCity’s AI-Assisted Grading feature empowers teachers through an AI-generated suggested score and explanatory feedback for Constructed Response items, which they can accept, edit, or reject. These suggested scores and feedback must be reviewed by the teacher before anything is returned to a student. Teachers remain the final decision-makers on every score.

This paper summarizes how SchoolCity built and validated this feature, the problem it addresses, how the human-in-the-loop workflow works, the accuracy and fairness controls, and the data privacy and security controls that govern the system."
