Learning Progressions: The Incubator for Focus Skills and Trip Steps
From the Introduction: "To provide optimal power and usefulness within our Star Assessments and many of our practice products, Renaissance takes a unique approach to content creation through the development of custom learning progressions. In general, learning progressions are descriptions of successively more sophisticated ways of thinking about key disciplinary concepts and practices across multiple grades, which outline intermediate steps toward expertise (Pellegrino, 2011). Learning progressions lay out in words and examples what it means to move toward more expert understanding (Wilson & Bertenthal 2005) in a subject area. While not unlike a traditional scope and sequence, learning progressions are far more thoughtfully developed and emphasize a holistic, cross-grades focus."The Full Report is available online: <https://renaissance.widen.net/s/jdm9kgx5cw/780549-lpfocusskills-whitepaper>.
Comparing phoneme recognition systems on the detection and diagnosis of reading mistakes for young children's oral reading evaluation (Lalilo)
From the abstract; "In the scope of our oral reading exercise for 5-8-year-old children, models need to be able to precisely detect and diagnose reading mistakes, which remains a considerable challenge even for state-of-the-art ASR systems. In this paper, we compare hybrid and end-to-end acoustic models trained for phoneme recognition on young learners' speech. We evaluate them not only with phoneme error rates but through detailed phoneme-level misread detection and diagnostic metrics. We show that a traditional TDNNF-HMM model, despite a high PER, is the best at detecting reading mistakes (F1-score 72.6%), but at the cost of a low specificity (74.7%), which is pedagogically critical. A recent Transformer+CTC model, to which we applied our synthetic reading mistakes augmentation method, obtains the highest precision (81.8%) and specificity (86.3%), as well as the highest correct diagnosis rate (70.7%), showing it is the best fit for our application."Citation: Gelin, L., Daniel, M., Pellegrini, T., & Pinquier, J. Implementing MTSS—How It Works
Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is an approach to monitoring students’ achievement and allocating resources based on identified need. This approach, sometimes called Response to Intervention (RTI), is based broadly on a public health model of monitoring, identification, and intervention, and is increasingly common in educational settings. In MTSS, educators help students meet academic goals through a tiered system of support. This guide illustrates the steps of an MTSS process, highlighting key principles for a successful implementation. The full report is available online: <https://docs.renaissance.com/R43363>.
Design and Evaluation of Star CBM Lectura
Over the years, classroom bilingual teachers and the emerging bilingual learners they serve have made some of the most astute observations questioning the validity and reliability of assessments of early literacy in Spanish that are mirror translations of below represent a small fraction of observations representing a 40-year frustration with the prevalent practice of assessment via direct translations from English to Spanish, frequently without validity and reliability studies in Spanish. The Research Foundation for Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader provides a balance of independent reading practice with nonfiction reading and close-reading skills practice. This document provides an overview of Accelerated Reader, covering topics such as the importance of personalized reading practice (both independent and instructional), using new technology, vocabulary practice, key reading practice factors (quality, quantity, and complexity), goal setting, an overview of ATOS, and efficacy research supporting the program. Text Complexity: Accurate Estimates and Educational Recommendations
Summarizes a report by Nelson, Perfetti, Liben, and Liben (2012) that verified the validity of ATOS as a text complexity measure and established new Text Complexity Grade Bands as a pathway to college and career readiness for grades 1-12. Also reports findings from an internal analysis that used Accelerated Reader and Star Reading data from the 2009-2010 school year to compare the effects of reading below, within, and above the suggested guided independent reading ZPD ranges. Results indicated that most reading was done within the suggested ZPD range, which was associated with gains in Star Reading achievement across the school year. Reading above ZPD was rare, but beneficial, as long as students were able to pass Accelerated Reader quizzes. Implications and helpful tools for encouraging more sophisticated levels of text complexity in student reading are also discussed.
